My name is Jay; I was born in South Africa, but grew up in England, from the age of 2. I came backpacking in SA for 6 months in 1999, and during that time I fell in love with this beautiful country. It then became my dream to own a backpackers here.

In 2002 I found my home in Knysna. The reason I love this part of South Africa, is the amount of outdoor activities there are and the stunning beauty of the forests, beaches and lagoons in the area.

After living here for 3 years and participating in many new adventure activities, I became very excited when an adventure company, in town, was for sale. I bought this company and was now involved in running Township Tours. Through this I started helping out the people in the township, we visited, and a couple of times a year taking some of the kids from the township out to the beach and having a braai (BBQ).

After learning that there were volunteers already working in the area, I realized I have a great setup to get other people that would like to come and help - to help me - help the township.

So my goal is to get these kids also involved in adventure activities, with the help of you guys.

The full idea is that the accommodation will be at Highfields Backpackers which has been running for 16 years now and is the most established, well setup backpackers in Knysna. With the Adventure Centre, also based at Highfields Backpackers, running activities and tours in the area, we can offer you a very competitively priced package including accommodation, transport, food and tours that will also help the community in which you are working.
